The American Red Cross is calling on blood donors who have survived COVID-19 to donate convalescent plasma to help those currently fighting the virus. Those who have recovered from COVID-19 have antibodies in their blood that can help others fight off the virus. American Red Cross Regional Communications Manager Joe Zydlo says those looking to donate convalescent plasma don’t have to do anything different when they show up to donate.

Donors are asked to make sure they have tested negative for COVID-19 before showing up to their local blood drive. In addition, Zydlo says blood donors need to make sure they are eligible to give blood.

The antibodies from someone who has recovered from COVID-19 can remain in their blood for up to four months. Zydlo explains why these convalescent plasma donations are important for those battling the virus.
