Mexico Continues Post-Closure Process for Landfill

The Mexico City Council approved the annual contract of obligation with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources connected to the sanitary landfill that closed in 1998. City Manager Bruce Slagle says the city started a 30-year post-closure process then, and has to show it’s prepared to cover any future financial liabilities.

The city estimates potential costs at more than 95 thousand dollars, and has more than 176 thousand dollars in its post-closure fund.

Potential future costs could be for monitoring ground water, controlling leaks, and erosion control.
