The State Highway Patrol reports five people died in traffic crashes, one person died in a boating crash, and one person drowned during the holiday weekend, between six Friday night and 11:59 last (Mon.) night. The Patrol investigated four of the traffic fatalities, and the other was by the Springfield Police Department. The Highway Patrol investigated 276 crashes, with 97 injuries; and made 113 DWI and 55 drug arrests on highways. On the water, there were seven crashes, three injuries, five boating while intoxicated arrests, and eight drug arrests. Last year, the Patrol investigated 318 traffic crashes, which included 121 injuries and six of 11 statewide fatalities. Troopers made 109 arrests for driving while intoxicated last year; investigated nine boating crashes involving four injuries and one fatality; and arrested four people for boating while intoxicated on the state’s rivers and lakes. There were no drownings during last year’s Labor Day holiday weekend.
