South Shelby and Monroe City Split Tightly Contested CCC Doubleheader

South Shelby and Monroe City went down to the wire for a doubleheader split Tuesday night at South Shelby High School.

South Shelby opened the girls’ game on a 16-0 run but had to withstand a furious Monroe City rally to earn a 42-40 victory. The Lady Panthers responded to their early deficit with an 11-1 run and cut the Ladybird lead to one on multiple occasions in the second half. That included a 41-40 South lead in which Belle Roush was fouled with four seconds left after rebounding a potential go-ahead shot from Taylor Pfaff. Roush’s subsequent trip to the free throw line decided the game.

South Shelby improves to 16-4 overall and 2-1 in the Clarence Cannon Conference. Coach Luke O’Laughlin said this game will serve as a good learning experience

Audri Youngblood led the Lady Panthers with 11 points as they fell to 10-9 overall and 1-2 in the CCC. Eight different Lady Panthers scored in the defeat. Coach Adam Rung said defensive adjustments got them back into the game.

In the boys game, Monroe City used a 14-0 run in the second half to erase an early South Shelby lead and earn a 45-38 victory. The Cardinals led by as many as nine in the first half and held a 22-18 advantage. However, the Panthers outscored the Cards 18-11 in the third quarter to grab their first lead since early in the first quarter. Waylon DeGrave helped seal the Panther victory in the fourth.

DeGrave scored eight of his game-high 16 points in the final quarter. Quincy Mayfield added 14 for the Panthers, who improved to 12-7 overall and 3-0 in the Clarence Cannon Conference. Coach Brock Edris explained the key to their second half rally.

Seven different Cardinals scored in the game. Noah Wilt served as the leading scorer with nine. Coach Kent O’Laughlin said the offense had a bad stretch in the second half.
