Parns Push Brookfield Past Lawson in Opening Round of Districts

The Brookfield Bulldogs overcame an early deficit to defeat the Lawson Cardinals 20-7 in the opening round of district play Friday night. The Cardinals intercepted a Trayce Switzer pass on Brookfield’s opening drive and proceeded to go ahead on a one-yard touchdown run by Keegan Bales. The Bulldogs responded with just under four minutes to go in the second quarter on a 13-yard touchdown run by Kendrell Carter. Lawson still led 7-6 after a failed two-point conversion. Carter then recovered a fumble on the Cardinals’ ensuing drive. The Bulldogs grabbed the lead in the waning seconds of the first half.

Lawson got the ball to open the second half and marched all the way into the Brookfield red zone. The Bulldog defense rose up on a fourth and two from their eight-yard line.

The Bulldogs forced another turnover on downs in their territory to start the fourth quarter. That turned into a long drive into Lawson territory resulting in the Bulldogs facing a fourth and short situation.

Switzer ran in the two-point conversion and John Walgren intercepted a pass from Lawson quarterback Brogan Crawford to close out the game. Switzer and Colton Parn combined to go 11-23 passing for 196 yards. Peyton Parn was the top receiver for the Bulldogs with six catches for 125 yards and a touchdown. Brookfield improves to 6-4 to secure its first winning season since 2015. They advance to face top-seeded East Buchanan next week in the district semifinals.
