North Shelby Boys, Cairo Teams Win First Night Games at La Plata Tournament

The Cairo Lady Cats and North Shelby Raiders collected first round victories at the La Plata Tournament Monday night.

In the boys 4-5 matchup, North Shelby’s strong second half propelled them to a 61-54 victory over Canton. The Tigers held a 28-27 lead at the half. The Raiders took a eight point advantage into the fourth quarter, then extended it further. Canton had a difficult time closing down the margin.

McDaniel put up a game-high 21 points for the 10-6 Raiders. Canton coach Samantha Powers said they need to continue improving on their transition defense.

The Tigers drop to 5-12 and were paced by senior Sam Arnold’s 17 points. North Shelby next faces Cairo in the semifinals. The Bearcats defeated Madison 87-9 in the 1-8 tilt.

In the girls 4-5 matchup, the Lady Cats avenged a loss to La Plata Friday, and defeated them 55-44. Cairo coach Brian Winkler loved the teams pressure they put on the tournament hosts.

The Lady Cats led wire-to-wire, and held a 20 point lead multiple times throughout the game. La Plata was without their second leading scorer Paige Carvajal, who suffered a back injury in their game Friday. Bulldogs coach Nathan Simler admitted they missed the freshman’s presence.

Cairo sophomore Gracie Brumley scored a game-high 17 points. La Plata drops to 9-6 and next plays in the girls consolation game Friday. 7-11 Cairo faces Canton Wednesday in the semifinals. The Lady Tigers earned a first round bye after eighth seeded Madison had to drop out of the tournament due to COVID-19 concerns. You can hear full postgame interviews with the coaches below:
