Moberly Posts Controlling Win Over Boonville

The Moberly Lady Spartans dominated possession and shots on goal in a 2-1 victory Thursday night over Boonville. The Lady Spartans registered all of the shots in the first half and were able to go ahead in the 13th minute thanks to Ella Mathes.

With the wind at their backs to start the second half, Boonville created an early threat on a pair of corner kicks. However, it was the Lady Spartans who notched the early second half goal.

It was St. Clair’s eighth goal of the year. That goal ended up being the game-winner as Moberly was whistled for a handball in their own box in the 57th minute. Isabel Alviso stepped-up to score the penalty kick and keep the Lady Pirates in the game. The rally never happened as Moberly created the game’s remaining chances to run its record to 16-3. Coach Bridger Pretz said he liked his team’s response following the Boonville goal.

Backup goalkeeper Kenlee Grant earned the win for the Lady Spartans while making one save. Pretz said his team played a solid game.

The Lady Pirates drop to 6-8 on the season. Goalkeeper Hillary James made several key saves late to keep the Lady Pirates in the game. Coach Alec Adair said his defense was solid throughout the game.

Adair added one particular aspect hurt them in the contest.

Boonville returns to action Saturday against Columbia Battle. Moberly stays at home for a Monday showdown against Mexico.
