Longtime Moberly Coach Ken Asbury Dies

Longtime Moberly coach and educator Ken Asbury has died. Asbury graduated from Moberly in 1955 and went on to play football, track and basketball at Missouri Valley College, where he graduated in 1959. He was inducted into the Missouri Valley College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987. Asbury began his teaching career at Moberly in 1972 and served in the school district until his retirement in 1994. Asbury was head football coach for eight years and led the track and field program for 19 years. He also served as head coach for cross country and wrestling for one year each.

Moberly Area Technical Center Director Sam Richardson lost a mentor……

Asbury took over the Spartans football program when Richardson was a senior. Richardson said the Hall of Famer was more than a coach to him….

Asbury won the 1985 KRES Coach of the Year award. His son, Karl, just stepped down as head football coach at Mark Twain. Karl was named the 2015 KRES Coach of the Year to make the two the first father-son duo to claim the award. Prior to his time in Moberly, Asbury spent 12 years as a teacher and coach at Park Hill.
