Horner Suspended-Bulldogs Upset-Truman Women Advance

A day after receiving Great Lakes Valley Conference Coach of the Year, Truman’s Jeff Horner was suspended from leading his team in the GLVC Tournament and the 2nd ranked Bulldogs were upset by Indianapolis 75-73 Wednesday night at Pershing Arena. Truman State University issued this statement before the game “Jeff Horner will not serve in any coaching capacity through March 7 and should return to the team after that time. The matter is not related to student health or safety. Because policy prohibits the disclosure of details regarding personnel matters, the University has no further statement at this time”.

As for the game, Indianapolis pulled off the shocker as a team that would not have been in the GLVC Tournament had Southern Indiana not opted out due to Covid quarantine. The Bulldogs seemed in control at the midway point of the second half….

Truman’s lead would increase to 64-51 with over nine minutes left, but the Bulldogs would only score nine points the rest of the way. Masen Miller’s last second three-pointer for the win dipped in and out and the Greyhounds ended Truman’s 13-game winning streak. Cory Miller, Junior led UIndy with 27 points. The Greyhounds head to the conference semifinals with a record of 11-11. Cade McKnight paced four Truman players in double figures with 21. The Bulldogs drop to 18-2.

Truman is the top team in the Midwest Region and will receive an NCAA at-large bid on Sunday night. Acting coach Austin McBeth looked ahead….

With top seed Truman out, Missouri-St. Louis will host the GLVC men’s semifinals and finals this weekend. (Drury vs. UMSL and Indianapolis vs. Lewis)

The Truman women enhanced their NCAA Tournament resume with a 76-73 win over Maryville. Katie Jaseckas led the Bulldogs to victory with 25 points, 15 rebounds, and four blocks….

That bucket made it 72-64. The Saints kept coming and got the score down to one possession. When Truman made just 1-of-4 free throws in the final seconds the door was left open for one last shot, but Antoinette Mussorici had her three-point attempt partially blocked and the Bulldogs advanced to the GLVC semifinals in Springfield. Coach Theo Dean said they weren’t able to close out the Saints until the very end….

Hannah Belanger scored 19, Katey Klucking had 13, and Ellie Weltha added 12 points and secured 14 rebounds. Jayda Jansen paced Maryville with 23. The Saints’ season ends at 11-11. At 15-3, Truman moves on to play William Jewell Saturday on the Drury campus. We will have the game on KRES at 2:15. The other semifinal has the host Panthers playing UMSL.
