Scotland Girls, Cairo Boys Repeat as District Champions

The Scotland County girls and the Cairo boys are once again district champions after victories at Schuyler County Saturday.

The Lady Tigers won their second consecutive district title by defeating the Lady Rams 42-36. The game was closer than what the final margin reflects. The Lewis and Clark rivals traded leads multiple times throughout. Schuyler County held a three point advantage late in the third quarter before Scotland County’s star point guard provided a key play.

Scotland County held on to a one point lead and were able to extend it to the six point margin thanks to a series of Lady Ram turnovers. After playing each other five times this year, Scotland County coach Cory Shultz explained why points were at a premium.

After scoring three in the first half, junior Hannah Feeney scored 12 second half points to lead all scorers with 15. The quest for Thomas Kirkland’s Lady Rams to end a long girls district title drought continues.

The last Schuyler County girls basketball district title was 1999. The Lady Rams finish the season 21-6, but will return four starters. Scotland County improves to 20-5 and travel to New Haven for Class 2 sectionals Wednesday.

In the boys Class 2 District 6 title game, the Cairo Bearcats cruised to their third straight district title with a 60-33 victory over Scotland County. Aside for an opening bucket by the Rams, Cairo led wire-to-wire to improve to 24-1. Bearcat coach Nic Zenker believed Cairo had one of their best defensive outings of the year.

It is the third time in program history Cairo has three-peat as district champions (1970-72, 2012-14 being the others). Jack Prewett led the way with 13, and two other starters reached double figures. Despite finishing the season 12-14, Scotland County coach Jeremy Austin said playing in a district title game was an invaluable experience for his young Tiger squad.
