The Palmyra Panthers defeated the Monroe City Panthers 7-1 in the Class 2 softball sectionals Wednesday night, and now have a date with Father Tolton Saturday in the state quarterfinals. The two teams each used small ball to score a run in the first inning. Palmyra pitcher Brooke Lawson got out of a one out, second and third base jam with back to back strikeouts in the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, that proved to be the spark Palmyra needed.

Scott Lunte with the call of Megan Stone’s RBI double on KRES and centralmoinfo.com. First baseman Cameron O’Brien then drove Stone in with a double to extend Palmyra’s lead to 3-1. In the top of the seventh, Palmyra scored four runs for the final score. Coach Jill Arch says Lawson getting those outs in the fourth was critical.

Lawson went four innings, striking out three, and walking one with one run allowed on four hits. Junior Lydia Althoff came in relief for Palmyra and struck out three and allowed one hit. Monroe City tallied five base hits and finish the season 16-8. Coach Melissa Chinn…

Catcher Bailee Hays was a bright spot in the Monroe City lineup, as she went 2 for 3. Palmyra will host the Trailblazers in Saturday’s quarterfinal.
