The change in the Mizzou football coaching staff and the one-year bowl ban topped our list of the top ten sports stories of 2019. The state track championships, including the tornado-disrupted big class meet and Monroe City’s title was second, followed by the Blues winning their first ever Stanley Cup. The rest of the top ten had Shelby County native Amy Eagan becoming the winningest coach for Truman women’s basketball, then her sudden departure for Drury at the start of the school year, area teams battling for state softball championships in Springfield (Salisbury winning the title), the Cardinals winning the NL Central, Truman’s historic football season which ended in victory at the first America’s Crossroads Bowl, Alonzo Verge rewriting the record books during the Moberly Greyhounds run to Hutch, the Moberly’s trophy and several titles at the state wrestling tournament, and La Plata’s state runner-up baseball season.
