La Plata to Visit Atlanta in Battle of Tri-County North Rivals

La Plata will visit Atlanta Tuesday night for a varsity basketball doubleheader between two fierce Tri-County North rivals. On the girls’ side, La Plata won two of the three meetings last season. La Plata brings a 9-4 record into the contest after snapping a three-game losing streak Friday night against Linn County. La Plata girls’ coach Nathan Simler says his team needs to focus on what they can control.

La Plata is led by Claire Coy and Paige Carvajal, who both average 15.9 points per game. Atlanta features just one senior on their roster in Mati Pinkston. Despite the overall youth of the roster, Atlanta coach Jason White says he likes the way the team has picked up from last season’s 13-7 record.

In the boys’ game, La Plata will look to build on momentum gained from Friday’s 61-56 win over Linn County. The win marked just the second on the season and the second-highest offensive output in a single game for the Bulldogs. La Plata boys coach Greg Buescher discusses the offensive keys against an athletic Atlanta team.

While La Plata comes in with a record of 2-10 Atlanta is 10-4 on the year. The Hornets feature a high-tempo offense averaging 67.5 points per game. White says they’re not taking anything for granted in this rivalry game.

The Atlanta boys’ have won the last four games in the series. Coverage will begin at 5:45 on 99.9 The Captain and centralmoinfo.com. Colin Schowe will have the play-by-play.
