Former Mizzou Assistant Heupel Takes Over Tennessee

A familar face to Missouri Tiger fans is returning to the SEC East this season. Josh Heupel is set to begin his first year as the head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers. Heupel previously served as Mizzou’s quarterback coach for the 2016 and 2017 seasons, where he helped mentor Drew Lock on his way to the NFL. He has served as the head coach of the UCF Knights for the past three seasons, where he went 28-8. Heupel said the biggest thing he has done since arriving at Tennessee is building relationships with his players.

Heupel takes over for Jeremy Pruitt who was fired after a 3-7 season in 2020. During his time at Mizzou, the Tigers finished 13th in the nation in total offense in 2016 and eighth in 2017. Heupel said he wants his offense to be fast and productive at Tennessee.

While Heupel describes his offense as quarterback-friendly, he adds the running backs will play a pivotal role as well.

Jabari Small is Tennessee’s most notable returner at the running back position. He rushed for an average of 4.5 yards a carry last season for the Volunteers. Despite, the limited options at running back, there is excitement among Tennessee players and fans on what the team can do offensively under Heupel. Senior wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. said Heupel’s offensive mentality played a role in him staying at Tennessee for his final season of eligibility.

Tennessee opens the season September 2nd against Bowling Green. They will visit Mizzou October 2nd. The Volunteers routed the Tigers 35-12 last season in Knoxville.
