In recent years, more high schools in Missouri have switched to eight-man football due to a decline in player numbers. North Shelby made the switch to eight-man in 2016 and Schuyler County announced the switch at the end of this past season. Declining numbers at Knox County might result in a similar switch for the Eagles. Knox County Superintendent Andy Turgeon says they had a discussion on the football enrollment numbers at this month’s school board meeting.

The discussion at the meeting uncovered a number of enrollment concerns. Turgeon says the biggest worry comes from the district’s overall elementary enrollment.

Turgeon stresses any potential switch to eight-man football for Knox County is in the distant future.

A total of 27 Missouri high schools participated in eight-man football in 2019.
