Fast Starts Lead Paris to Sweep of Madison

The Paris girls and boys basketball teams used fast starts to blow out Madison Monday night at Paris High School.

The Paris Lady Coyotes outscored Madison 19-4 in the first quarter on their way to a 39-16 victory over the Lady Panthers. The opening quarter gap was created thanks to a 15-0 scoring run by Paris. All of those points came on three-pointers, the first two courtesy of Kameron Arnett.

All six of Paris’ rostered players scored in the victory. Emily Buck led the Lady Panthers by scoring ten of their 16 points. Madison girls coach Cory Riley said his team had too many defensive breakdowns early.

In the boys’ game, Paris used a 9-0 run in the opening quarter to help cruise to a 47-13 win over Madison. Evan Smothers filled up the score sheet by scoring 28 points. Meanwhile, the Coyote defense limited Madison to just five first half points. Paris boys coach Jeremy Skinner explained the keys to his team’s defensive success.

Connor O’Bannon scored eleven of Madison’s 13 points in the contest, while the Panthers’ top scorer Reed Layton was held off the scoresheet. Madison boys coach Jacob Youse said nothing went right on the offensive end.

Both schools’ varsity basketball teams are back in action Tuesday as Madison hosts Cairo and Paris visits Westran.
