Cairo Teams Shine on Night Two of Glasgow Tournament
Both Cairo teams, the Fayette girls, and New Franklin boys earned quarterfinal victories at the Glasgow Tournament Tuesday.
The Fayette Lady Falcons and New Franklin Lady Bulldogs engaged in the closest contest of the night. Fayette led most of the way but New Franklin kept it close and took a brief lead in the third quarter, thanks in large part to a 28 point effort by Abby Maupin. However, Abbey Conrow scored 26 points for Fayette to lead the Lady Falcons to a 69-59 victory. Fayette head coach Valerie Foland said she was pleased with her team’s persistence.
Both teams featured young rosters. New Franklin has no seniors on this year’s roster. Despite falling to 0-3 with the loss, New Franklin head coach Morgan Vetter said she was happy with her team’s effort.
The night ended in a win for New Franklin courtesy of their boys team. The Bulldogs used a 32 point effort from Gavin Bishop and a smothering defense on their way to a 63-40 win. The Bulldogs only led 24-18 at the half, but took control in the third quarter thanks in large part to a three pointer by Bishop.
Colin Schowe with the call on 99.9 The Captain and centralmoinfo.com. Bishop’s three-pointer was part of a 23 point third quarter burst which saw the Bulldogs grab control for good. Glasgow was led by Drew Sanders with 13 points. Glasgow coach Mick Cropp said not much went right on the night.
Cairo’s boys defeated La Plata 53-31 in the second contest. Bearcats head coach Nic Zenker assessed the win.
Zenker’s senior guard Colby Hale scored 26 for the 2-0 Bearcats. Hale produced 18 in the first half as Cairo entered the locker room with a 30-10 advantage. La Plata joined the Glasgow Tournament this year, and head coach Greg Buescher said the loss provided valuable lessons.
Tel wheeler paced the 0-2 Bulldogs with 11. Cairo meets New Franklin in a two-three semifinal matchup Thursday. La Plata plays host Glasgow on the consolation side.
The Cairo girls opened the day with a 63-24 win opposite Slater. Cairo trailed 11-7 after one, then senior Taegan Bartolacci sparked a 28-5 second quarter run.
Eric Duick with the calls on Bartolacci’s 30-point night for 1-1 Cairo. Madisyn Beeler recorded a team-high 11 points for 0-2 Slater, who next faces New Franklin. Cairo challenges Fayette in the semifinals Thursday.
