Cairo Clashes with Silex in Sectional Final

Two familiar foes collide in a Class 1 softball sectional final Wednesday as the Cairo Lady Bearcats take on the Silex Lady Owls. The Lady Bearcats enter this contest after earning an 18-1 statement win in the Class 1 District 7 championship over Westran, while the Lady Owls defeated Van-Far 14-4 in the District 8 title to capture their third district crown in four years.

The Lady Bearcats have won six of their last seven games entering Wednesday’s contest. Head coach Brian Winkler says jumping out to early leads has been key to the Lady Bearcats success.

Cairo averages 8.7 runs a contest. Winkler says a key to victory will be taking the game an inning at a time.

The Silex Lady Owls come in with a record of 19-2 and are averaging over 10 runs a game. Head coach Rebecca Pralle says the entire lineup has been clicking all year.

Pralle discussed what makes Lady Owls starting pitcher Taylor Howard so effective.

The last time these two squads met was in the 2007 state championship game, with Cairo prevailing 1-0. Both teams have won a state championship since then, with Silex taking home the state crown back in 2012.

Brandon Monty will have the call of this contest on KWIX and centralmoinfo.com starting at 5:45.
