WATERWAY INFRASTRUCTURE STILL WOEFULLY OUTDATED

Heavy flooding and overtopped levees dominated headlines in 2019, bringing attention to outdated infrastructure along America’s major waterways. Paul Rohde, Midwest region vice president of the Waterways Council, says most control structures along the Mississippi were designed and built in the 1930s, but not to last as long as they have.
Rohde says communication with Congress and other leaders is key to ensuring that improvements are finally funded and completed. He adds that the ag and shipping communities have much in common.
Rohde notes that when modernizing locks on the Mississippi River, he would like to avoid the delays and cost overruns experienced by the Olmstead Locks project on the Ohio River between Kentucky and Illinois.
