Truman Men Quick Start-Upper Iowa Women Rally From 16 Down In The 4th In A Split At Pershing Arena

The Truman men jumped out to a quick start and led wire-to-wire in beating Upper Iowa 97-85 in the conference opener for both teams at Pershing Arena today (Sat.)….

Brad Boyer with the call on KRES and centralmoinfo.com. The Bulldogs held the GLVC’s top scoring team to 30 first half points, led by 15 at the break, and kept the double digit advantage in the second half. Trey Shearer scored a career-high 28 points for coach Jeff Horner….

Both Shearer and Kobi Williams went 4-of-6 from the three-point arc and the Bulldogs went 14-of-23 from distance. Williams finished with 19 points. Division Two’s second-leading scorer, Jake Hilmer scored 19, which was eight points below his scoring average. Both teams are now 3-4.

The Upper Iowa women erased a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter and beat Truman State 88-86 in overtime. Bulldog freshman Molly Joyce scored seven straight points in the fourth quarter….

The lead was 16 with 6:51 left. The Peacocks outscored the hosts 21-5 the rest of the way and freshman Ava Privet shot and made her first two college free throws with 32 seconds left to send the game into overtime tied at 78. Truman coach Theo Dean explained where the game got away….

Katie Tornstrom led Upper Iowa with 21 points. The Peacocks are now 1-2 in the GLVC and 3-3 overall. Ellie Weltha scored 19 and moved into 8th place on the Truman career scoring ladder (1,364). Ainsley Tolson added 18 and moved past 1,500 points for her college career. The Bulldogs are winless in three tries in conference play to drop to 3-6.

The schools will play another basketball doubleheader next Saturday, this time in Fayette, Iowa. We will have the broadcast on KRES.
