Special Teams Help Moberly Outscore Osage For First Victory

Moberly had two kick return touchdowns to help outscore Osage 43-37 Friday night at Dr. Larry K. Noel-Spartan Stadium…..

Brad Boyer with the call on KWIX and centralmoinfo.com. That Derieus Wallace burst started back-and-forth scoring in the first half. An Aidan Williams 36-yard run for Osage was answered by the first of two Gage St. Clair touchdown runs on the night that made it 14-7 after one. The Indians got a 40-yard TD pass from Konnor Vaughn to Hunter Graber to tie the game, only to have Collin Huffman connect with Wallace for his second big play of 58 yards to make the score 20-14. The Spartans got two more before the half when Tremayne Watts blocked a punt that went out the back of the endzone to make the score 22-14 at the break.

Osage failed to cover the opening kickoff of the second half and St. Clair turned that into a 30 yard touchdown run to make the score 29-14. Vaughn connected with Eric Hood on a 70 yard pass play to make it a one score game. The Spartans immediately got that one back….

Derek Bradley’s 29 yard run on the last play of the third quarter and PAT made it 35-29 Moberly. The Spartans forced Osage to punt from deep in their endzone to get great field position at the 32. A throw back pass to Chris Alexander on third down got Moberly on the doorstep and Alexander finished the possession with a two yard plunge to make the score 43-29. Osage wasn’t done, as Vaughn hit Graber in the endzone from eight yards out and the two-point run by Vaughn made the score 43-37. The Indians got the ball one last time at their own 19 yard line. After one completion, Nick Kessler picked off a desparation pass to end the game.

Spartans coach Cody McDowell agreed his special teams dominated the game…

Moberly couldn’t hold a 14-point 4th quarter lead last week in Sedalia. McDowell was pleased his team was able to finish against a resilient Osage squad…..

St. Clair had his first 100-yard rushing game. The Spartans improve to 1-1. Osage drops to 0-2. Vaughn threw for 253 yards and three scores. Moberly will visit Winfield next Friday.
