Smith-Cotton Scores Late To Beat Moberly

Mylan Hawkins scored his third touchdown with 51-seconds left and added the game-winning two-point conversion to give Smith-Cotton a 22-21 victory over Moberly Friday night in Sedalia….

Austin Ward with the call on KWIX and centralmoinfo.com. The Tigers rallied from a 21-7 deficit in the fourth quarter to win the season opener.

The Spartans scored the only points of the first quarter on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Collin Huffman to Derieus Wallace. Hawkins provided the one first half highlight for the Tigers with an 84-yard burst to put the hosts up 7-6. The junior running back finished with an unofficial 164 yards rushing. Moberly took advantage of a late first half fumble by Smith-Cotton when Gage St. Clair punched it in from two yards out with 17 seconds left to give the Spartans a 14-7 lead heading into intermission.

St. Clair got his second touchdown of the game with 11 seconds left in the third quarter…

Huffman completed a two-point conversion pass to Wallace to make it 21-7 Moberly heading into the fourth. The Tigers took the ensuing kickoff and marched down the field for a Hawkins score with 7:24 left. The Spartans were on their own 40 with just under four minutes left. A 4th and one gamble did not pay off when Huffman was stopped on a quarterback sneak. The Tigers took the short field and drove for the winning points. Moberly coach Cody McDowell owned the decision to go for it….

Smith-Cotton quarterback Lane Simmons rushed for 130 yards. Simmons and Hawkins combined for 294 yards rushing. One of the two were involved in every play from scrimmage for the Tigers counting the four pass completions by Simmons. Wallace had six receptions for 91 yards for Moberly and an interception.
