A bill in the Missouri House would help promote the state’s hardwood products industry. State Representative Danny Busick says the industry amounts to about $5 billion for the economy and employs about 27,000 Missourians.

House Bill 2650, sponsored by Ron Copeland of Salem, would set up the Missouri Hardwood Forest Product Promotion Fund. If approved, lawmakers would still have to come up with a funding mechanism. Busick would like to see something similar to the soybean checkoff.

The Agriculture Policy Committee held a public hearing on the bill last week.
