Randolph County Schools Repeat as Glasgow Tournament Champions

The Westran boys and Cairo girls repeated as champions of the Glasgow Tournament tonight.

Westran grinded out a 49-39 victory over Cairo in the boys title game. The two teams were tied 28-28 entering the final quarter. With star post player Langden Kitchen sitting on the bench with four fouls the Hornets got contributions elsewhere to step up. The fourth quarter surge stated with Blake Williams.

Colin Schowe with the call on 99.9 The Captain and centralmoinfo.com. Williams converted the free throw to give the Hornets a four-point lead. Ashden Dale stretched the lead a short time later.

Dale finished the game with 17 points while Langden Kitchen led all scorers with 19. Westran coach Chris Sander said he was proud of the way his team stepped-up in the fourth quarter.

Logan Head led the Bearcats with 15 points while Hayden Holman added 14. The Bearcats held a 12-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and neither team held a lead larger than three until the fourth quarter. Cairo boys coach Nic Zenker said his team battled to the end.

Westran improved to 6-0 while Cairo fell to 2-2.

In the girls championship game, the Cairo Ladycats led the entire game in a 61-35 victory over the New Franklin Lady Bulldogs. All five Cairo starters totaled at least 8 points with Macie Harman, Jersey Bailey and Avery Martin all scoring in double figures. Carly Dorson had 16 points to lead the way for the 4-1 Lady Bulldogs. Coach Morgan Grosse offered her takeaways from her team’s tournament performance.

The New Franklin Bulldogs dominated from beginning to end in an 84-32 win over the Fayette Falcons to claim the boys third place trophy. Eleven different players scored for the Bulldogs. Drake Clark led the balanced effort with 17 points. New Franklin boy’s coach Jim Schlotzhauer said the team’s depth is becoming a strength.

The Bulldogs ran their record to 4-1. Chase Allen-Jackman led the Falcons with 16 points. Fayette boys coach Jon Bishop said his team needs to do some soul-searching.

The Falcons fell to 1-2 and will rematch with New Franklin on Tuesday.

In the girls third place game, the Marceline Lady Tigers erased an eight point halftime deficit and outscored the Fayette Lady Falcons 41-15 in the second half in a 62-44 victory. Marceline coach Mike Severa said everything clicked for the Lady Tigers after halftime.

Marceline’s Addison Huber led all scorers with 26. Fayette coach Daryl Betts discussed the second half struggles.

Marceline is 2-1 while Fayette falls to 1-2.

The Glasgow Yellowjackets got a combined 44 points from Edris Hamilton and Jordan Fuemmeler in a 75-50 win over Slater in the boys consolation final. Yellowjackets coach Mick Cropp liked the cohesiveness of his offense.

In the girls consolation game La Plata used a second half surge to defeat Glasgow 51-32. The Lady Bulldogs trailed 21-19 at the half before grabbing control. Freshman Layne Mack led La Plata with 13 points while Claire Coy and Whitney Snow added eleven each. La Plata coach Nathan Simler explained what got his team going in the second half.
