More Details Regarding Longhorned Tick in Linn County

Dr. Rosalie Ierardi spoke on Show-Me Today regarding the rare longhorned tick that was found in Linn County last month. This species of tick was identified in southern Missouri last year. Ierardi clarifies the origin and travel the species has made.

Ierardi says the main concern regarding the longhorned tick is its ability to to transmit bovine theileriosis, which attacks the cow’s red blood cells. She says awareness is key.

Bovine Anaplasmosis has similar effects as bovine theileriosis, but is much more common throughout the United States. Ierardi advises producers to not base their assessment of disease on sight alone.
