Macon Rallies Past Mexico to Claim District Title

For the second straight game, the Macon Tigers used a sixth-inning rally to claim victory as they defeated Mexico 2-1 to win the Class 4 District 7 Championship. Mexico jumped ahead in the fourth inning on a two-out RBI single by Austin Maxwell. The Tigers responded in the sixth inning as Trey Hatcher and Logan Petre hit back-to-back singles with two outs. That set the stage for the designated hitter Logan Hillard.

Drew Meisner finished the complete game by setting the Bulldogs down in order in the seventh inning. Macon coach Travis Mundahl credited Petre’s hustle for giving Macon the lead.

Macon improves to 22-6 on the season and claims its second district title in three years. Mundahl said this district championship is a reward for the team’s hard work.

Landyn Kleinsorg pitched five shutout innings for the Bulldogs. He gave way to Andrew Runge in the sixth inning, who retired the first two Macon hitters prior to the rally. Mexico coach Daniel McCarty explained the reason for the pitching change.

The Tigers outhit the Bulldogs 8-4 in the game. Meisner retired the last eight Bulldog batters he faced. McCarty pointed to a missed opportunity in the fifth inning as the turning point.

Mexico concludes the season with a 10-19 record. They graduate six seniors from this year’s team. Macon will host Fulton in a Class 4 Sectional Tuesday night.
