Green City Sweeps Varsity Basketball Doubleheader at Atlanta

The Green City boys and girls basketball teams got off to a strong start in Tri-County North Conference play with a doubleheader sweep at Atlanta.

In the boys game, the Gophers used a dominant second half to pull away from the Hornets in a 73-46 victory. Green City jumped out to a 22-8 lead at the end of the first quarter before the Hornets responded with a big second quarter that saw them cut the Gopher advantage to three. The Gophers led 40-32 at the half but pulled away with a 13-0 run to close the third quarter

Colin Schowe with the call on Superstation KRES and centralmoinfo.com. Asher Buggs-Tipton led the Gophers with 22 points while Kaden Hatcher added 19. Eight different Gophers scored in the game. Coach Matt Ayers said it was good to see the scoring depth emerge.

The Gopher defense held Atlanta to 14 points in the second half on the way to improving to 6-0 on the season. JJ White led the Hornets with 15 points and Sawyer Nelson chipped-in with ten. White scored all seven of the Hornets points in the third. Coach Jason White discussed the offense’s second half struggles.

Atlanta falls to 5-3. The girls game saw Green City use an 11-0 run late in the first quarter to build towards a 60-47 win. The Lady Gophers gradually expanded the lead over the first three quarters and led by as many as 27 before the reserves came in. Jaryn Hatcher led the Lady Gophers with 20 points while Macy Jeffries and Lily Crist added 13 each. Coach Nick Edwards discussed their performances.

Green City improves to 5-1 while Atlanta drops to 3-4 following its second defeat to the Lady Gophers. White said turnovers were an issue again.

Atlanta committed 34 turnovers in the first game against Green City. Bailey Watson led the Lady Hornets with 22 points.
