Gohring’s Complete Game Shutout Eliminates Macon

A complete game shutout from Fulton’s Walker Gohring brought an end to Macon’s season with a 2-0 loss in the Class 4 Sectional round. Both teams had just one hit apiece heading into the sixth inning. Wyatt Wilfley led off the top of the inning for the Hornets with an infield single. An error on a bunt by Ethan Burt put two runners aboard for Ethan Millius who bunted both into scoring position. The Hornets then turned to freshman pinch hitter Ben Leslie to break the deadlock.

Gohring went the distance with six strikeouts, one walk and two hits allowed. Fulton coach Jacob Lorentzen discussed his starter’s performance.

The Hornets played error-free baseball behind Gohring and were able to outhit the Tigers 5-2. Macon coach Travis Mundahl credited the entire defense of Fulton.

Fulton improves to 18-8 on the season and advances to face St. Charles West Thursday in a Class 4 Quarterfinal. The Hornets start six sophomores on a regular basis. Lorentzen said his young team has come together as the season has gone on.

A first-inning double by Gage Lewis and a sixth-inning infield single by Mykel Linear were Macon’s lone hits. Hayden Burns suffered the tough-luck loss for the Tigers as he went five-plus innings allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Mundahl said he was proud of everything Burns accomplished in his senior season.

The Tigers graduate nine seniors from this year’s team.

Macon concludes the season with a record of 22-7.
