Westran’s Bain and Hallsville’s Cox Win Golf State Titles; Marceline Westran and South Shelby Finish in Top Four

The 2022 Missouri State Golf Championships were successful for local golfers and their teams this week. In Class 1, defending state champion Westran finished third with a two-day score of 699. However, Logan Bain captured the school’s first-ever individual state title by carding a 156. Westran’s acting head coach Mike Nagel said Bain had a strong start to day two.

Colin Brandow was also a state medalist as he finished ninth with a score of 166. Nagel said the team did a good job focusing on day two following some unique circumstances.

Fellow Lewis & Clark Conference School Marceline finished one spot ahead of Westran with a two-day score of 681. The Tigers finished three strokes back of state champion Cole Camp. Will Heller finished fourth with a 162 and Jacob Stallo placed eighth with a 165. Marceline coach Mike Severa said it was a team effort to claim second place.

Salisbury narrowly missed the top four as they finished with a team score of 722. Elliott Hayward carded the low score for the Panthers with a 164, good enough for sixth.

In Class 2, South Shelby finished fourth in their first-ever trip to state. The Cardinals shaved 18 strokes off their first day total to jump from fifth to fourth. South Shelby coach Kevin Mitchell explained the difference between the two days.

Casen Glover led the Cardinals with a two-day score of 162 to finish sixth. South Shelby’s lone senior Elijah Kline finished in 34th with a 182.

The top of the Class 3 standings also had local representation as Hallsville’s Logan Cox shared first place with Bishop LeBlond’s Samuel Schoeberl with a 144. The championship is Hallsville’s first-ever individual golf title. Father Tolton won their first state title with a 587, 14 strokes clear of second place Bishop LeBlond.
