TSU Bulldogs Look To Extend Winning Streak Against An SBU That Got Them Last Year

The Truman Bulldogs will look to extend their winning streak to five, but they’ll have to do so against a Southwest Baptist team that knocked them off last year. The ‘Dogs are 4-1 and won their conference opener over Missouri S&T last week. SBU is 3-3 and 1-1 in the league.

The Bearcats beat Truman 27-21 for just their fifth victory in 33 tries against the Bulldogs. Truman coach Gregg Nesbitt says SBU quarterback Cooper Callis presents a tough matchup for the Truman defense.

Backup quarterback Collin Sutton threw for a touchdown and rushed for a 46 yards for the ‘Dogs last week. Nesbitt says Sutton helped jumpstart the run game last week and adds versatility to the offense.

SBU coach Robert Clardy his ‘Cats will need to play the same game that got them in the win column last year.

In that win, Callis threw for 401 yards. He shared the GLVC Offensive Player of the Year award with Truman’s Cody Schrader. Clardy says Callis is getting help from the run game this season.

The Bearcats also have a Player of the Year candidate on the other side of the ball in linebacker Coleton Smith, who had a whopping 162 tackles last season.

The next Truman win will be the 600th in the 113 years of Bulldog football.

SBU at Truman will be the only game of the season under the lights for the Bulldogs. You can hear the broadcast on Superstation KRES and centralmoinfo.com starting with the Truman Tailgate at 5:15. Brandon will have the play-by-play this week alongside Eric Holm and Hank Janssen.
