Top Seeds All Win on Opening Night of Class 1 District 10 Tournament at Sturgeon
All four top seeds rolled to easy wins on the opening night of the Class 1 District 10 girls basketball tournament at Sturgeon High School Monday night.
The Glasgow Lady Jackets dominated in a 51-19 win over the Higbee Lady Tigers. It was raining threes for Glasgow, thanks in large part to Malia Carmack.
Lucas Smith with the call on 99.9 The Captain and centralmoinfo.com The sophomore guard ended the night with 24 points to pace Glasgow. She hit seven three’s in a two quarter span. Coach Molly Monnig said Carmack was able to find holes in the Higbee zone.
Glasgow as a team knocked down 11 shots from behind the arc, six of them in the third quarter. Glasgow was able to hold Devin Clark to 10 points, 7 below her season average. Higbee only managed five made field goals against the stingy Glasgow defense, all but one coming from Clark. Higbee will lose three seniors, but head coach Tanner Burton is excited for the future of this program.
Higbee closes the season with an 8-16 record, while Glasgow improves to 12-12. The Lady Jackets will have a chance to get over the .500 mark on Wednesday, when they face Cairo Wednesday night at 7:30.
The Cairo Lady Bearcats started fast and never looked back in a 70-41 win over Sturgeon. Cairo opened the game on an 11-0 run and led 36-12 at the half. Four different Lady Bearcats landed in double figures. Coach Brian Winkler said they have developed some scoring depth late in the season.
The win was Cairo’s sixth in a row. Despite the slow start, the Sturgeon Lady Bulldogs fought to the bitter end. A second half push saw Sturgeon outscore Cairo 22-20 in the third quarter. Sturgeon coach Dan Kruse said he was proud of his team’s effort in the second half.
The Madison Lady Panthers led all the way in a 44-17 win over the Wellsville-Middletown Lady Tigers. Senior Lexi Wolfe led the Lady Panthers with 14 points, including a 3-pointer at the end of the third.
Wolfe and fellow guard Savanna Cullom provided plenty of problems for Wellsville at the top of the press. Cullom was the only other Madison player in double figures with 10. The guard tandem were a large reason for the Lady Panthers’ success according to coach Dalton Armontrout.
Madison jumped out to a 14-5 lead after the first frame and never looked back. Wellsville was held 16 points below its season average, in large part due to the absence of leading scorer Morgan Bryant. Wellsville ends the season with a 9-14 record, the highest win total for a Lady Tiger squad in 10 years. Madison improves to 11-13 and will face top-seeded Community R-6 Wednesday night at 6.
In the night’s opening game Community blitzed Keytesville 83-16. The Lady Trojans scored the game’s first 19 points en-route to the victory. Dalaney Bowers led a balanced Lady Trojan attack with 20 points. Community coach Bob Curtis said the fast start was big for his team.
Keytesville was led by Madison Brashear who scored all nine of her points in the first quarter. The Lady Tigers conclude their season with a record of 0-21.
