On the final day of the 2021 Missouri Legislative Session, the House gave final approval to a sales tax on out-of-state purchases made online. Representative Cheri Toalson Reisch of Hallsville says the goal of this legislation is to even the playing field between small brick-and-mortar stores and online retailers.
Senate Bills 153 and 97 were this year’s editions of what is popularly known as Wayfair legislation. While purchases online will be taxed, Toalson Reisch says the legislation does come with a caveat.
The bipartisan vote for the Wayfair legislation from the House was 145-4. Passage of this legislation was a priority of Governor Mike Parson’s during his State of the State address at the beginning of the session.
