South Shelby Girls Win District Championship in Thrilling Fashion

The South Shelby Lady Birds edged out the Palmyra Lady Panthers 59-55 in a thrilling Class 3 District 6 final at Monroe City today. Palmyra jumped out to an early nine-point lead. South Shelby started clawing back to trim the deficit to five to make it 17-12 in favor of Palmyra after the first quarter. The Lady Birds went on to outscore the Lady Panthers 18-12 in the second quarter to take a 30-29 lead into halftime. Nic Thomas with the calls on KTCM and Sydney Compton hit two free throws on the next possession to give Palmyra a 55-54 lead before South Shelby’s Belle Roush put the Lady Birds on top for good…

Hannah Wegman sank both free throws to seal a 59-55 clinch the District Championship for the Lady Birds. South Shelby head coach Luke O’Laughlin was proud of his team for staying composed in an intense atmosphere.

Palmyra’s season ends with a final record of 19-8. Palmyra head coach Alex Brandenburg was proud of his team’s effort in the game and throughout the season.
