Six Class 2 Boys, Four Class 1 Girls Advance to State Wrestling Semifinals

Six Class 2 boys and four Class 1 girls advanced to the state semifinals and clinched All-State status Thursday.

Hallsville’s Gavynn Carpenter grabbed the biggest win of the day with a 6-1 triumph over three-time state champion Sam Ewing of Pleasant Hill.

Coach David Nugent said the win was earned.

Fellow Indian Parker Crane and Southern Boone’s Hunter Jennings won their quarterfinal matches.

In his fourth state appearance, Kirksville’s Dominic Cahalan secured a top-six finish for the first time in his career.

Freshmen teammates Justin Schutter and Austyn Hunter join him in the semis.

Moberly’s Breanne Gibbs needed just 18 seconds to win her quarterfinal match and become the first girls state placer in program history. Coach Charlie Gibbs…

Southern Boone’s Callie Bergthold reached the semis for a second straight year. Palmyra sophomore Ellyse Lorenson advanced by injury forfeit. Brookfield freshman Jayden Keller is in and the team is tied for third after Day 1. Senior Addison Pope is one of four Lady Bulldogs still alive in wrestlebacks.
