Silex Uses Six-Run Third Inning, Two Home Runs to Defeat Cairo

The Silex Lady Owls used a six-run third inning and two home runs in the fourth inning to defeat the Cairo Lady Bearcats 10-0 in a Class 1 sectional final Wednesday.

Silex led 1-0 after two innings off an RBI-groundout from Abigail Mooney. In the bottom of the third inning, the Lady Owls loaded the bases for Tori Mudd.

Mooney followed Harlan with a home run on the next at-bat to seal the victory for Silex. Silex starting pitcher Taylor Howard held the Lady Bearcats offense in check, allowing just two hits while striking out seven in five innings of work.

With the loss, Cairo ends its season with 11 wins and a district championship. Head coach Brian Winkler reflected on the 2021 campaign.

With several talented underclassmen on the roster, Winkler is optimistic about the future of Cairo softball.
