Schuyler County Boys, South Shelby Girls Secure North Shelby Tournament Championships

The final day of the North Shelby Tournament included first place finishes by the Schuyler County boys and South Shelby girls, with the La Plata girls and Cairo boys securing third place.

The Schuyler County Rams erased a deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat the South Shelby Cardinals 51-46 in the boys championship game. The Cardinals held a lead at the end of the first three quarters. Schuyler County took over the possession trailing by two when senior Kale Windy delivered from deep.

Steven Findley Jr with the call on Glory 97.3 and The Rams took over the final frame, outscoring the Cardinals 18-9. Windy produced 14 second half points to give him 26 total. Coach Chris Prewitt reflected on the win.

South Shelby missed six free throws in the fourth, with Schuyler County converting six of its seven free throws in the quarter. Coach Kent O’Laughlin.

Senior Chance Rainey led the Cardinals with 19 points. South Shelby falls to 8-8. Schuyler County improves to 12-2.

South Shelby used a 20-9 third quarter to create separation in a 67-57 win over Cairo for the girls championship. South led 15-14 after closing the first quarter on a 12-5 run.

13-3 South Shelby was led by Belle Roush’s 20 points and Callie McWilliams contributed 13. Olivia Cross scored a team-high 16 for the 13-4 Lady Cats. Macie Harman ended with 12. Coach Brian Winkler said it’s good to play teams like South Shelby.

Winkler’s Cairo boys followed with a thrilling 55-53 win over Marion County to take third place. It was tied at 53 in the waning seconds…

There were six ties in the fourth quarter alone. Justin Thrasher’s nine points included a buzzer beating three at the end of the first half to cap an 8-2 Cairo run and give the Bearcats a 35-27 advantage. That first half had seven lead changes. The second half started with a 6-0 Marion County run but the Mustangs never regained the lead until early in the fourth. Porter Britt had 16 points, Joey Lagemann 15 and Jackson Stewart 12. Winkler was happy with the tough win.

Cairo’s Bryce Chrisman, Dalton Taylor and Shaun Luecke scored 18, 13 and 10 respectively. The Bearcats move to 6-9 and Marion County falls to 9-5.

In the girls third place game, La Plata senior Claire Coy’s 28 points lifted the Lady Dogs to a 71-58 win over Schuyler County. Coy and Lady Rams senior Raina Small went toe-to-toe from range throughout the game.

La Plata earns its second win against Schuyler County this season. The Lady Dogs advance to 13-2. The Lady Rams drop to 9-6.
