SBU Upsets Truman

Cooper Callis threw for 401 yards and three touchdowns to lead Southwest Baptist to a 27-21 upset of Truman State in Bolivar Saturday. After Truman scored a touchdown on their opening drive, on a Cody Schrader one-yard plunge, Callis answered on SBU’s next possession on a 20-yard TD pass to Preston Carson. A key turnaround came in the second quarter when Matt Hall caught a 31-yard pass, but had the ball jarred free near the goal line and the Bearcats scooped up the fumble and started their next drive at the six. Callis connected with Jordan Kent on an 85-yard pass to the nine and two plays later the same combo scored on a four-yard completion for a 14-point swing. SBU picked off a Nolan Hair pass on the next Bulldog possession, which resulted in a 22-yard Logan Turner field goal to make it 17-7 at the half.

Hair’s first collegiate rushing touchdown capped Truman’s first drive of the third quarter. Callis answered with a 53-yard touchdown pass to Cassian Foreman to make it 24-14 ‘Cats. The Bulldogs put together an 80-yard drive on their next possession…

Truman’s next possession stalled shy of midfield and a Taylor Cornish punt pinned the Bearcats back at their 11. SBU got one first down, but with just over two minutes left on third down, Callis made his one mistake of the day….

The Bulldogs drove down to the SBU 28 yard line, but after a first down spike, the effort to complete a game-winning drive ended with three straight incompletions. Truman coach Gregg Nesbitt reacted to the loss…

Schrader rushed for 101 yards, but the Bulldogs only averaged 3.6 yards a carry. Nesbitt credited the SBU defense…

SBU had two receivers go over 100 yards. The Bearcats improve to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the GLVC.

Isaiah Estes of Fayette led Truman in tackles with 14. Hall had 100 yards receiving on seven receptions. The Bulldogs drop to 5-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Truman’s homecoming game is next Saturday against William Jewell. You can hear the game on KRES starting at 1:15pm.
