It won’t be for the state title this time around, but the Salisbury Lady Panthers will be looking for revenge all the same when they face the Maysville Lady Wolverines in this year’s Class 1 semi final at 11 am tomorrow in Springfield. Last year, Maysville defeated Salisbury for the state title by a final score of 3-2 in eight innings. This year, Salisbury has been on a mission. The Lady Panthers have outscored their opponents 46-0 in four postseason games to book their return trip to Springfield. Salisbury coach Nate King credits his senior leadership.

Friday’s semi final will feature the same pitching matchup as last year’s state championship game. Bryn Wooldridge will start for Salisbury, while Maysville will go with Sadie Smith. Last year, Smith battled through the full eight innings, while striking out nine Salisbury batters to get the win. King says they will have to do a few things differently in order to come out on top against Smith.

Along with Smith, Maysville returns the hero of last year’s championship game, Ashton Willis. As a freshman, Willis belted a walkoff home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Maysville the class 1 state title. Maysville coach Brooke Ebersold says her sophomore slugger is part of a young, successful core.

Last year, Maysville hitters were held to just six hits and struck out 17 times while facing Salisbury ace Bryn Wooldridge. Ebersold feels her hitters will learn from last year’s experience of facing Wooldridge.
