Safley Looking to Continue Winning Tradition as La Plata’s New Baseball and Boys Basketball Coach

Matt Safley was recently named the new boys’ basketball and baseball coach at La Plata High School. Safley is a 2015 graduate of La Plata who featured on both the basketball and baseball teams. He says he’s looking to maintain a winning tradition at La Plata.

Safley served as an assistant coach for the past four seasons under Josh Woodward and Andy Jackson for La Plata baseball.

Woodward served as the Bulldogs’ head coach for the past ten years leading them to five district titles. La Plata finished third in Class 1 in 2017 and second in 2019. Safley also has big shoes to fill on the basketball side.

Greg Buescher won 526 total games as a basketball coach across 32 seasons. He had served as La Plata’s softball and boys’ basketball coach for the past six years. Sarah Espy has been named the new La Plata softball coach.
