Researchers Announce African Swine Fever Vaccine Success
Researchers developing a vaccine to help stop the spread of African Swine Fever say they’ve achieved 100 percent effectiveness. A recent study published by the American Society for Microbiology found that both low and high doses of the vaccine were 100 percent effective against ASF when the pigs were challenged 28 days post-inoculation.
However, the vaccine is not yet commercially viable, nor is any such vaccine against ASF. Arlan Suderman of I-N-T-L F-C Stone says more work needs to be done to meet regulatory requirements…
Suderman says the vaccine brings mixed market implications for U.S. hog farmers…
Investigators at the Plum Island Animal Disease Center in New York developed the vaccine. Their research was motivated by the 2007 outbreak of African swine fever in the Republic of Georgia, which researchers say was also the genesis of the current outbreak in China.
