Putnam County Boys Win OT Thriller, Scotland County Girls Fall One Shot Short

The Putnam County boys advanced to their first-ever Show-Me Showdown with an overtime win at MACC Saturday. Scotland County’s girls concluded their season with a state quarterfinal loss.
Putnam County outlasted Sacred Heart 70-65. The Midgets trailed by seven inside two minutes.

The Midgets continued to overwhelm the Gremlins with defensive pressure in overtime. Veteran Putnam County turned several of its takeaways into free throws. Coach Kyle Fleshman analyzed the comeback.
The Midgets trailed by 15 in the first half. Fleshman played for one of Putnam County’s five district championship teams in 2004. The fifth-year head coach reflected on the opportunity to guide Putnam County to Springfield.

The Scotland County girls fell 45-44. The Lady Tigers got out to a 10-3 lead late in the first quarter before St. Paul cut the deficit to one by halftime. Scotland pushed the lead back to five after three but St. Paul again rallied and both teams exchanged leads in the fourth. Scotland’s final opportunity came on the last play.

Alaynna Whitaker led with a game-high 16 points, Hannah Feeney scored 13 and Abby Curry put in 11. St. Paul’s Adrien Martens provided a team-high 15 points. St. Paul advances to the Show-Me Showdown with a record of 23-5. Scotland County’s season ends 24-4 and the Lady Tigers graduate all five starters.
