Potawatomi Trail of Death Memorial Caravan Runs Through Randolph County Thursday

The Potawatomi Trail of Death Memorial Caravan will run through much of the listening area on Thursday. Randolph County Historical Society Board Member Joe Barnes details their route.

The Trail of Death was the march the Potawatomi were forced to take after being removed from their land in Indiana in 1838. The march ran from Twin Lakes, Indiana to Osawatomie, Kansas and lasted 61 days. Barnes explains why it was such a deadly trip.

Records show 41 people, mostly children, died on the trip. Stops in Missouri include Palmyra, Monroe City, Old Clinton and Paris. Barnes shares the planned stops in Randolph County.

The Trail of Death Memorial Caravan is done every five years by Potawatomi, historians and interested people.
