Palmyra scored in four out of five innings on their way to a 20-6 win over Monroe City in Clarence Cannon Conference action Thursday night. Monroe City led 5-4 to start the top of the third. However, leadoff batter Nolyn Richards quickly changed that for Palmyra.
Colin Schowe with the call on KTCM 97.3 and centralmoinfo.com of Richards’ first home run of the season. Richards came into the game with a .138 batting average. Acting Palmyra manager Matt Thomas said the home run showed what Richards is capable of.
Following Richards’ home run, Palmyra would score five more runs in the third inning including a key RBI double from Landyn Smith. Smith went 2-3 on the night and came around to score three times. He also pitched two scoreless innings of relief to get the win for Palmyra. Thomas said they need Smith to have these kinds of performances each night.
Palmyra outhit Monroe City 9-7 for the game. However, Monroe City committed five errors, hit eight Palmyra batters, walked eight more, and had numerous wild pitches on their way to their fourth loss of the season. Monroe City coach Derek Vanlandingham said they simply made too many mistakes.
Colten Barger, Carter Jones, and Gavin Mudd all pitched in the game for Monroe City. Vanlandingham analyzed his hurlers’ issues.
