Palmyra Overcomes Three Deficits to Claim Mayors Cup From Monroe City

The Palmyra Panthers overcame three touchdown deficits to defeat Monroe City 30-20 and claim their first Mayors Cup since 2015. Monroe City took a 20-14 lead early in the fourth quarter courtesy of a 4-yard touchdown run by junior Joshua Talton. Palmyra answered back in a big way thanks to their three time state wrestling finalist.

After going three and out on the ensuing drive, Monroe City snapped the pigskin over the punters head and Palmyra started their next drive on the Monroe City six yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Brody Lehenbauer cashed in from four yards out for the final score. Palmyra coach Kevin Miles explains what it means to bring the Mayors Cup back to the flower city.

Miles and Palmyra have rallied from behind two straight games.

Monroe City opened the scoring in the first quarter with a Ceaton Pennewell touchdown run. Palmyra punched back at the end of the quarter with a 36-yard run by Wade Begley. Monroe City took the lead back late in the second quarter with Talton’s first score from 12-yards out. Lehenbauer tied the game at 14 in the third quarter with a 9-yard run. Monroe City drops to 3-2, but coach David Kirby was much happier with his teams performance compared to last week.

Monroe City will welcome Brookfield next week. Palmyra holds serve as the top ranked team in Class 2 and moves to 5-0. Palmyra travels to Clark County next week. You can hear Miles’ and Kirby’s full postgame interviews below:
