One Dead In Train Accident East of Madison

A Norfolk Southern freight train derailed on Sunday afternoon when a tractor-trailer semi-truck collided with the locomotive at the U.S. Highway 24 train crossing about two miles east of Madison. At approximately 2:45, a truck driven by 65-year-old Russell Minnis of Higbee was traveling eastbound when he failed to stop at the crossing just outside of Madison. Norfolk Southern train engineer, 45-year-old Matthew Sunderland of Decatur, Illinois was uninjured in the accident. The railroad crossing on Highway 24 is equipped with crossbars, bells, and warning lights.  Troop B’s Public Information and Education Officer, Corporal Justin Dunn with Missouri State Highway Patrol says crews are working to clear the accident scene…

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office announced that it expects the highway to remain closed through at least Wednesday, and is also reminding area residents to not move barricades to go through.
