Olivia Coy and La Plata Victorious in Pitchers’ Duel

La Plata’s Olivia Coy and Canton’s Kenzie Guilfoyle combined to strike out 31 batters but it was La Plata’s late offense that proved the difference in a 1-0 victory. La Plata began the final frame with four straight hits after being held to one through the first six innings.

Coy gave up four hits, one walk and struck out 15 in the shutout effort.

For Canton, Guilfoyle fanned 16 batters. Coach Kristyn Caldwell said it was a tough way for her lone senior’s season to end.

Caldwell is excited to return eight of nine starters next year.

Canton finishes with a 19-5 record. La Plata moves to 24-7 and will meet conference foe Atlanta in the state quarterfinals Saturday.
