NTSB Investigation Underway into Fatal Amtrak Accident Near Mendon

Details are beginning to come into focus regarding Monday’s fatal accident involving an Amtrak train and a dump truck at a passive train crossing near Mendon. The National Transportation Safety Board has begun its investigation of the accident. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy provided some early details.

All eight train cars and both locomotives derailed. Three passengers are confirmed dead, along with the driver of the dump truck. Approximately 150 others were injured in the accident. Homendy said they’re looking into the Amtrak train’s version of a black box.

The NTSB is also attempting to download the electronic control module from the truck to gather similar data. Homendy said there are several factors that they’ll look at regarding the accident.

The NTSB is expected to hold another press conference Wednesday afternoon to provide further details on the investigation.
