North Shelby Girls Hold Off South Shelby Comeback; Cardinals Claim Key Win

The Shelby County rivals split their annual nonconference doubleheader as the North Shelby girls and South Shelby boys were victorious Friday.

The North Shelby girls outlasted South Shelby 49-43 in the first contest. The Lady Raiders sprinted to a 21-2 advantage early in the second quarter, but the Lady Birds clawed back late.

The 3-5 Lady Birds later possessed the ball down two with 30 seconds left, but South Shelby committed a turnover, and North Shelby closed the game with four straight free throw makes. Landon Daniel’s Lady Raiders snapped a five-game losing streak against their rivals.

North Shelby freshman Caroline Linberger scored a team-high 14. The 5-3 Lady Raiders led 28-14 at half and 38-27 after three. South Shelby head coach Luke O’Laughlin evaluated the comeback effort.

Wood paced O’Laughlin’s Lady Birds with 14. South Shelby plays Paris in the Salisbury Tournament Monday.

The South Shelby Cardinals beat the North Shelby Raiders 61-52 in the boys contest to pick up their second win of the season. South Shelby led by four after three quarters and had a couple timely triples to force separation.

Austin Ward on the calls. Cole Mitchell finished with a game-high 23 points and went 12-14 from the charity stripe. The game saw a total of 63 free throws, but North Shelby missed 14 of its 23 attempts. Coach Daniel said his team’s struggles came to more than just free throws.

North Shelby falls to 5-3 and next faces Green City Monday; South Shelby is now 2-6 and plays Salisbury in the first round of the Salisbury Tournament Tuesday. Hear full interviews with O’Laughlin and Daniel below.
