New National Farmers Union president Rob Larew says a new rule proposed by USDA would undermine the century-old Packers and Stockyards Act. In a statement Friday, Larew said farm families have long been at a disadvantage to poultry and livestock industries, and that the proposed rule would make the situation worse by making it harder to litigate unfair practices. Missouri Farmers Union board member Eddy Mitchell agrees.

Mitchell was part of Missouri’s delegation at NFU’s annual convention earlier this month in Georgia. He added that delegates also discussed another item contributing to the imbalance, the lack of mandatory Country Of Origin Labeling.

Eddy Mitchell of Centralia also noted that NFU delegates approved a special order of business calling for truth in labeling laws preventing plant-based and lab-grown products from being labeled as meat.
