Monroe City Boys Survive Another Thriller Against Palmyra

The Palmyra girls topped Monroe City in the first game of a Clarence Cannon Conference doubleheader Tuesday, and the Monroe City boys outlasted rival Palmyra in thrilling fashion. In the boys contest, Palmyra possessed the ball in a 59-59 game with eight seconds left.

Bryce Stark hit the ensuing free throw, then Monroe City’s Antwuan Battle stole Palmyra’s baseline inbound with 4.4 seconds left. Previously, Stark tied the Monroe City Tournament championship game versus Palmyra with a 3-pointer at the regulation buzzer. Before Stark’s game-winning layup Tuesday, sophomore Josh Talton scored two of his 13 points.

Talton missed the free throw, which Palmyra rebounded ahead of the late turnover and Stark steal for 20-2 and sixth-ranked Monroe City. Palmyra head coach Ryan Wood analyzed the sideline inbound play with eight seconds left.

Palmyra sits 18-4 and 4-2 in the CCC. Monroe City head coach Brock Edris shared the Panthers’ defensive approach.

Monroe City improves to 4-0 in league play after it overcame an 18-7 deficit. Junior Logan Buhlig scored 20 off the bench. Palmyra’s Jayden Durst provided 18.

Fourth-ranked Palmyra beat Monroe City 62-53 in the girls game. Palmyra senior Megan Stone snapped a tie with a personal 5-0 run in the middle of the third quarter, and Chris Parsons’ Lady Panthers controlled to the end.

Posts Rylie McKinney and Amy Bryan scored a combined 23 points for 19-3 Palmyra, and Bailey Lovelace added a game-high 15. Monroe City head coach Cody Leonard offered his takeaways.
